Gardening By the Moon

As you know, I was raised a City Girl, but when I grew up and fell in love, it was with a dairy farming, corn fed, Country Boy!

Dale and I have lived outside of town for 12 years now, on a nice chunk of acreage.  I quickly fell in love with Country Life, even if it meant doing chicken chores and planting gardens.

Dale and I both have AMAZING Gardeners in the family, so sadly, they left only the BLACK THUMBS to us.

It took a few years, a lot of killed plants, and a multitude of mistakes, but we now have 2 big gardens, and a strawberry patch, that we maintain in the summer. SUCCESSFULLY I might add!

We are also teaching ourselves to can our produce, so that has been exciting! I will share some of those favorite recipes later this summer if you’d like.

My Aunt, who we call the Gardening Goddess of the family, plants by the Moon. You may think that sounds silly, but if you read about the Full moon and its pull on the waves of the ocean and the tide, you will see it is INDEED something to pay attention to.

If you still don’t believe me, just talk to a Labor and Delivery or ER Nurse.

So supposedly, plants that are sown in the days before these moon cycles, will be more productive. Moon Gardeners say that the gravitational force of the full moon affects the water in the soil, as well as the magnetic field changes of the Earth that encourage plant growth.

I can’t prove this or disprove this, but we try to do this every year and it WORKS for us!

New Moon – 1st Quarter: Above ground crops with seeds you see. Cabbage, lettuce, spinach etc.

1st Quarter – Full Moon: Above ground crops with seeds in pods, fruit or flowers. Beans, melons, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers etc.

Full Moon – Last Quarter: Blubs & Roots Crops. Carrots, garlic, onions, potatoes, grapes.

Last Quarter – New Moon: Barren.

Happy Gardening!

Spring finally seems to be here!

I don’t know about you, but I was so excited about its arrival, that I wet my plants.

Tee hee!  😉

  1. Okay…so I totally want to move in next door and mooch off of your awesomeness!!!! When I read the title of this blog post I really thought you and Dale gardened at night by the light of the moon. Literally! And…I thought that sounded like a fun idea…gardening under the moonlight! I’m going to blame my silly thought process on my exhaustion today! 😉

  2. Very cool! I will have to try this.
We’re doing a small raised garden as our (read: MY) first attempt at gardening since I was in middle school. I was going to just start with some young plants. Do you think that the moon will have the same bearing on this vs doing it with seeds?

  3. So cool! Never heard of gardening by the moon, but I love the way you mother, think, love…that I know this info is a keeper. I’ve been praying for your family as you learn to live with your loss. God’s best to you and your precious family.

    • Thank you, Holly! What a beautiful compliment. And thank you for your prayers, life seems to march on, but for us, we just need it to stop for a moment so we can breath. Its almost summer, hoping life will give us a break then.
